Michael Darling, MCA Chief Curator, in conversation with Ari Bendersky

Listen in as Lifestyle Journalist Ari Bendersky is led through the Museum of Contemporary Art by Michael Darling, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator. Inside, Darling takes Ari on a tour of “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg,” a retrospective exhibition of Japanese artist Takashi Murakami curated by Darling.

Michael Darling joined the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA) in July 2010 as the James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator. Prior to the MCA, Darling was the Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), and Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has worked as an independent writer and curator, contributing essays on art, architecture, and design to publications including Frieze, Art Issues, Flash Art, and LA Weekly and frequently serves as a panelist, lecturer, and guest curator on contemporary art and architecture.

Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and is curated by the MCA’s James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator Michael Darling. This major retrospective of Murakami’s paintings features fifty works that span three decades of his career, from the artist’s earliest mature works—many of which are being shown in North America for the first time—to his recent, monumentally scaled paintings. The exhibition is presented in the Griffin Galleries of Contemporary Art on the museum’s fourth floor through September 24, 2017.

Ari Bendersky is a lifestyle journalist, video producer and editor with extensive experience in print and the digital arena with expertise in food, wine, travel and wellness. He also contributes considerable work in content marketing and copywriting, working with agencies, Fortune 500 companies and small businesses.
