MCA Checks In: Laurie Simmons
This installation is inspired by The Mess, an artwork by artist Laurie Simmons, on view now at the MCA Chicago. Since the 1970s, Simmons has created iconic photographs, sculptures, and films exploring topics still poignant today, using her art to deconstruct archetypical gender roles and upend the American dream of prosperity.
This spring, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presents a major retrospective of works by Laurie Simmons (American, b. 1949) celebrating an artist who has distinguished herself as a pioneer of new directions in art photography. More than four decades of work by Simmons are on display, with her iconic photographs, sculptures, and films highlighting her importance both historically and as an active contemporary artist.
“Laurie Simmons: Big Camera/Little Camera” is on view at the MCA Feb 23 – May 5, 2019
