Opening Reception: Jacqueline Surdell
June 3, 2022 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Drawing Room, North Fireplace
Join us to celebrate the new art installation, Laurels, from Jacqueline Surdell, on display at the hotel through July.
Jacqueline Surdell (American, b. 1993) works at the intersection of art and athleticism. Her work utilizes aspects of fibers, found-object, video, performance, and installation to challenge the ontological and physical spaces between the human body and sculpture, between the performative and the object-driven.
With Laurels, Surdell invokes the anonymity of collective accomplishment as a means of addressing the aesthetic, iconographic, and spiritual aspects of achievement. In doing so, she asks us to question the place from which social and monetary values are collectively derived. With the incorporation of mass-market products bearing reproductions of mythological icons and art historically foundational works of American landscape painting, Surdell finds her answers in the form of what remains when these objects are stripped of the psychological gravity of their intended use.
